Last year, I mistakenly thought that the pandemic was winding down. I failed to realized that anti-science views were so strong in the United States that dozens of millions would avoid the life-saving vaccine, even when we have stockpiles (while poor countries go without), and I didn’t take the omicron mutation into account either. I’ve marked the time a year ago on the graph above. Back then I wrote: “With blinking eyes and cautious steps, somewhat like the Brood X cicadas swarming parts of the Eastern United States now, we are re-emerging as the pandemic winds down. What stays? What changes?”

We are at a crossroads. Prove me wrong.
What an amazing retreat! It goes by so quickly that looking back now is a blur – but so many moments jump out nonetheless! At the start of the retreat I knew only a few people beyond their names and some online discussion, so being able to attach a real person to a name (or meet new people all together) helped me see how our community is growing.
