Here comes New Year’s Eve! What will you make from it? A fun evening? A window into the vastness of space and time? Steps towards a better life, a better you? All of these are possible!
Happy Winter Solstice, or Yule! Of course, our spherical planet also gives us the beautiful symmetry of the Summer Solstice (Litha) being celebrated now by our Southern Hemisphere friends. With the exact Solstice moment at 10:27 pm (EST) on December 21st, the longest night for most of those in America is the night of the 21st, but for some in Eastern Eurasia, the longest night is the night of the 22nd. This is different for every time zone, and is easy to figure out. If the instant of the Solstice is in the morning (before noon) in your local time zone, then the longest night is the night before. If it’s in the afternoon or evening, the the longest night is the night after the Winter Solstice for you.
Well, if you are like me, you still have plenty of last minute things to do in the few remaining hours before Solstice. If so, then here are some great The Wonder podcasts for the time after Solstice! Or, if you’ve already got all your ducks in a row, they can help the Solstice spirit build. Either way, here are some great topics – surviving the holidays, our monsters, interviews with Atheopagan councilmembers, and a look at the Solstice! All those, and more, are on the page here.
For many of our Ancestors, eclipses were times of terror and dread. Now we can forecast them with precision down to a fraction of a second, and understand well what is going on. Plus, we can even predict events with a narrower path of view – like the once in a lifetime “eclipse” of Betelgeuse (the bright red star of Orion’s left hand) by an asteroid!

For many of us, this is a big Sabbat, which takes a more preparation (and if you are buying gifts, the 2023 Naturalistic Pagan Gift List here might help). Whether it’s due to cultural inertia, or kid’s expectations, the importance of Stars and this Sabbat, or whatever, it’s a big deal in our family. We are already well along with the the Solstice doors Advent practice and with decorating. If you have been doing your Winter Solstice traditions for years, if you are just starting your family and are currently building the traditions which will bring the Universe to your kids, or anything in between, I hope that the traditions and practices on this post are found to be useful, inspiring, or just comforting.
