You can help HumanisticPaganism place an add at The Wild Hunt, the primary online destination for news relating to and of interest to contemporary Pagans. The Wild Hunt is our third largest referrer of traffic to HumanisticPaganism.com, after Facebook and search engines. HumanisticPaganism is piggybacking on The Wild Hunt’s Fall Funding Drive. The Wild Hunt is offering to place a graphical underwriting ad on the main page of wildhunt.org for the first 20 people to contribute $500. An ad at The Wild Hunt would greatly increase the visibility of HumanisticPaganism and draw more people to our community. If we reach our $538 goal ($500 + $38 Indiegogo fees), we will contribute $500 to The Wild Hunt and receive a graphical underwriting ad on the main page of wildhunt.org. If we don’t reach our goal, $150 will be contributed to The Wild Hunt (making us an affiliate) and the balance will be retained for next year’s campaign. Any contribution over $10 will get you a shout out at HumanisticPaganism (unless you prefer to remain anonymous). I wrote last year about my five fears of dying. They included four familiar ones—fear of pain and fears of letting go of my life and my ego—along with one that is hazier and less familiar. This is the fear, as I wrote then, that when I die “the rest of the universe will end also. It’s a quirk of the brain, I think—a spinoff of trying to imagine nothingness.” This fear is not severe or continuous—it comes in flashes—but it is recurring. I don’t know if others have this experience. I haven’t read or heard that they do. I grant that this fear may have some roots in my particular psyche, but I also suspect that others have probably felt irrationally that their death will in some way threaten things or people beyond themselves. I was raised an atheist. My parents were careful to explain the importance of respecting other people’s religious beliefs but they didn’t see the point in us knowing anything about religious practice. Certainly we never celebrated or ritualized our beliefs.

A Review of Donald A. Crosby’s A Religion of Nature, by Crafter Yearly

I recently finished reading A Religion of Nature by Donald A. Crosby. And while it wasn’t the most pleasurable reading experience, it was still an important one. Crosby, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Colorado State University, writes in the style of an analytic philosopher—which is to say that his writing is exceedingly clear, direct, and understandable, but not particularly poetic or moving. I can see where many non-philosophers would be put off by his style of writing. But I think that’s a shame, because A Religion of Nature is an important book that should be read widely, especially by Pagans. Read More
